Set up before you fly
Install Alipay or WeChat and follow the current in-app process for your account and card. Complete any requested identity checks using the official app. Keep access to the phone number linked to your account for verification messages.
At the checkout
Ask which payment methods the merchant accepts. Check the recipient and amount before confirming a QR payment. Your foreign card may work differently for merchant payments and person-to-person transfers; do not assume every function is available.
Fees and limits
Read the fee prompt and your card issuer’s currency-conversion terms before paying. Limits, supported cards and identity checks may differ by account and can change. There is no single fee rule that covers every visitor.
Keep a backup
Bring a physical card and some RMB cash. If your wallet fails, a second card or cash avoids making your whole day depend on a phone connection.
