Lost Your Phone in China? What to Do in the First Hour

If you lose your phone in China, first call it and use Find My (iCloud.com) or your Android finder to lock it and mark it as lost. Then freeze Alipay (call +86 571 95188, or 95188 inside China) and WeChat (More Options > Security Center > Freeze Account on any phone), block any linked bank cards, and get a loss report from the police for insurance. Phones left in taxis are often returned: contact the driver through the DiDi trip history or the taxi company on your receipt.

The short version

In China your phone is your wallet, map, translator and ticket, so losing it feels like losing everything. Phone theft is not common, and most lost phones are left in taxis, restaurants and trains. Work through this list, ideally with a friend’s phone or hotel staff helping:

  1. Call your phone. Whoever found it may answer.
  2. Lock it and mark it as lost with Find My (iCloud.com) or your Android finder.
  3. Freeze Alipay (+86 571 95188, or 95188 inside China) and WeChat (More Options > Security Center > Freeze Account).
  4. Block your bank cards that are linked to the wallets.
  5. Trace it through DiDi trip history, the taxi receipt or the place you last used it.
  6. Get a police report if you will claim on insurance.
  7. Get reconnected: a new phone, a new SIM or eSIM and your apps back.

The Alipay and WeChat steps were checked against their official help pages on 3 October 2026.

Step 1: call it and lock it

  • Call your number from a friend’s phone, or ask hotel reception to call it. Honest finders, drivers and restaurant staff often answer.
  • iPhone: on another device, sign in at iCloud.com (it works in China) and use Find My to see the location, play a sound and turn on Lost Mode with a contact number on the screen.
  • Android: use your phone maker’s finder service. Google’s Find Hub needs Google services, which are blocked on Chinese networks, so use a device on roaming data, an eSIM or a friend’s phone abroad if it does not load.
  • Do not erase the phone yet if there is a chance of getting it back. Erasing stops location tracking.

Step 2: freeze Alipay and WeChat

Your payment apps are linked to your bank cards. Freeze them even if your phone has a passcode.

Alipay

  • Call Alipay customer service: +86 571 95188 from a foreign number or outside the Chinese network, or 95188 from a Chinese phone. Ask to report the phone lost and freeze the account (挂失, guàshī).
  • Or sign in on another phone with your account and change your login and payment passwords.

WeChat

  • On any phone: open WeChat, tap More Options on the login page, then Security Center > Freeze Account, and follow the steps.
  • On a friend’s phone where they are logged in: Me > Settings > Account Security > Security Center > Freeze Account.
  • You unfreeze it the same way once you have a working phone.

Your bank cards

Call your bank or use its app on another device to temporarily block the cards linked to Alipay and WeChat Pay. Most banking apps can freeze a card in seconds and unfreeze it later.

Also change your email password, especially if it is the account that receives password reset messages.

Step 3: trace it

Where you lost it What to do
DiDi or Alipay ride Open your trip history on another device and contact the driver or report a lost item
Street taxi The receipt shows the taxi company and car number. Call the company or ask your hotel to call
High-speed train Tell station staff at once, or call the railway hotline 12306 and give the train number, car and seat
Metro Go to the station service center (客服中心). Lines have lost and found offices
Restaurant, shop or hotel Go back or ask your hotel to call. Staff usually keep lost phones behind the counter
Airport Ask at the airport information desk or call the airport’s service hotline

Tip: ask hotel reception to make calls for you. A Chinese speaker gets through faster, and staff are used to helping with lost items.

Step 4: report it to the police

You need a police report for most travel insurance claims, and it helps if the phone is found later.

  1. Call 110, or go to the nearest police station (派出所, pàichūsuǒ). Ask your hotel where it is.
  2. Bring your passport, the phone’s model, its IMEI number if you have it (it is on the box and in your Apple or Google account), and where and when you lost it.
  3. Ask for a written report or receipt of the report (报案回执, bào’àn huízhí).

Insurers often want the report within 24 to 48 hours. See China travel insurance.

Step 5: get back online

Your phone number and SIM

  • Home SIM or roaming: call your home carrier to block the SIM and ask for a replacement or an eSIM. Your home number is where your bank and Alipay send verification codes.
  • Travel eSIM: contact the provider. Many can issue a new QR code, but some eSIMs cannot be moved to a new phone, so you may need to buy a new one.
  • Chinese SIM card: call 10086 (China Mobile), 10010 (China Unicom) or 10000 (China Telecom) to block it, then get a replacement at a carrier store with your passport.

See China eSIM vs local SIM card.

A new phone

Apple Stores, Huawei, Xiaomi and other brand stores are in every big city, and electronics malls sell phones at all prices. Chinese-market phones work with Alipay and WeChat, and iPhones bought in China work worldwide.

Your apps

  1. Install Alipay and WeChat and sign in with your home phone number. Unfreeze WeChat as above.
  2. Expect extra security checks on a new device, such as a face scan or a friend verifying you on WeChat.
  3. Re-add your transit codes and ride apps. See best apps for China travel.

Getting through the day without a phone

  • Ask your hotel to call taxis for you and write addresses in Chinese.
  • Use cash. Every shop must accept RMB cash. Find an ATM with your physical bank card. See cash and ATMs in China.
  • Street taxis take cash, and metro ticket machines take coins and notes.
  • Your train ticket is your passport, not your phone, so you can still travel.

Prepare before you travel

  • Write down your hotel address in Chinese, your bank’s overseas number, your travel insurer’s number, your embassy’s emergency number and one family phone number. Keep it on paper, away from your phone.
  • Set up Alipay and WeChat on two devices if you travel with someone, or keep a cheap backup phone.
  • Turn on Find My or your Android finder before the trip, and note your IMEI.
  • Back up your photos daily over Wi-Fi.
  • Use a phone strap or lanyard in crowds, on boats and on mountain trails.

Help while you sort it out

If you are traveling with a partner or friend, their phone becomes your lifeline. Your personal travel concierge can help over WhatsApp from any phone: calling the taxi company or hotel in Chinese, finding the nearest police station and helping you get reconnected. For a quick replacement connection, we can also set you up with a China eSIM. For emergencies, always call 110 for police or 120 for an ambulance first.

GOOD QUESTIONS. STRAIGHT ANSWERS.

Your questions, answered.

Less guesswork. More looking forward to your trip.

What should I do first if I lose my phone in China?

Call your number from a friend’s phone or ask hotel staff to call it: many lost phones are simply answered by whoever found them. At the same time, sign in to iCloud.com or your Android finder to lock the phone and show a contact number on the screen. Then freeze Alipay and WeChat and block any bank cards linked to them.

How do I freeze Alipay if my phone is lost?

Call Alipay customer service on +86 571 95188 from outside the Chinese network, or 95188 from a Chinese phone, and ask to report the phone lost and freeze the account. You can also sign in to Alipay on another phone with your login details and change your password. Block the bank cards linked to Alipay with your bank as well.

How do I freeze my WeChat account from another phone?

Open WeChat on any phone. On the login page, tap More Options, then Security Center, then Freeze Account, and follow the steps. If a friend is logged in, they can go to Me > Settings > Account Security > Security Center and choose Freeze Account for you. You unfreeze it the same way once you have your phone or a new one.

Will I get my phone back if I left it in a taxi in China?

Often, yes. If you booked through DiDi or Alipay, open the trip in your history on another device and contact the driver or report a lost item. For a street taxi, the receipt shows the taxi company and car number; call the company or ask your hotel to call for you. Act quickly, before the driver takes many more trips.

Do I need a police report for a lost phone in China?

For travel insurance claims, usually yes. Go to the nearest police station (派出所) with your passport, or call 110, and ask for a written report of the loss or theft. Bring the phone’s model and IMEI number if you have it. Insurers often require the report within 24 to 48 hours.
